Introduction 

India’s AI market is on a steep growth curve one report projects it will triple to about $17 billion by 20217 and most business leaders see AI as vital to staying competitive. In fact, 79% of leaders say AI is critical for competitiveness, yet 60% are concerned their company lacks a clear AI strategy. At the same time, public concern is mounting: a World Economic Forum study finds 75% of people now worry about AI’s ethical risks like bias, privacy invasion, job loss, etc. Not to forget, AI can quickly escalate from a driver of innovation to a source of harm. The risks are already visible, unauthorized deepfakes impersonating individuals privacy breaches where personal data is harvested without consent to train models and cybersecurity threats where AI powers sophisticated attacks against organizations. Unchecked AI can also lead to discrimination in hiring, undermining the right to equality, autonomous systems acting without oversight, endangering safety; and even national security concerns through the misuse of AI in cyber warfare.  

In India, policymakers are already signaling future AI rules. For example, a March 2024 MeitY advisory requires platforms to clearly label AI-generated content and implement safeguards against misuse. Rather than wait for laws to be passed, leading organizations can self-regulate by establishing internal AI governance now setting a responsible, ethical framework that aligns with values and stakeholder trust. 

Top AI Risks Organizations Must Address in 2025

Set a Clear Vision and Tone from the Top 

Successful AI governance starts at the top. Leaders should publicly commit to responsible, value-driven AI, treating governance and ethics as important as innovation. Define AI success not just by financial or efficiency gains, but by how AI use upholds your organization’s values and serves stakeholders. Articulate that AI initiatives must also be safe, fair and transparent, and that human oversight and accountability are non-negotiable. When the CEO and board champion this vision, it sets a tone at the top that reinforces everyone’s accountability. 

Align with International AI Ethics Principles 

Anchor your governance in established global AI ethics frameworks. Many international bodies have issued high-level principles that can guide your policies. For instance, the OECD AI Principles endorsed by 46 countries stress that AI should be innovative yet trustworthy, respecting human rights and democratic values. UNESCO’s AI ethics recommendation similarly highlights transparency, accountability and privacy as core. Common themes to adopt include: 

  1. Safety and Reliability: AI systems should be robust, secure and dependable. 
  1. Equality and Non-discrimination: AI must not perpetuate bias or unfairly disadvantage any group. 
  1. Inclusivity: Treat diverse user needs, avoiding outcomes that harm marginalized populations. 
  1. Privacy and Security: Respect personal data rights; apply strong data protection to AI training data. 
  1. Transparency: Provide clear, understandable information about how AI decisions are made. 
  1. Accountability: Ensure there are mechanisms to audit and address AI-caused harms. 
  1. Human-centric Values: AI should reinforce positive social values  

Establish an AI Governance Structure with Clear Roles 

Treat AI governance as a formal, cross-functional program  not a side project. A common best practice is to create an AI governance committee or working group with representatives from business units, legal, IT, HR, data science, risk management and compliance. Some organizations even have an “AI Ethics Board”  to give independent oversight. 

Within this structure, assign specific responsibilities. For example, your Chief Risk Officer or compliance team can own overall AI risk management, they’d monitor emerging AI laws, oversee risk and impact assessments, and report on governance performance. 

  • The Chief Data Officer or CTO might take charge of technical standards and model validation, ensuring data quality and bias testing.  
  • Legal and compliance teams should stay on top of regulation changes including advising on contracts with AI vendors; 
  • Crucially, assign accountability: each AI project should have a designated owner for data privacy, for fairness testing, for security, etc.  

Clear ownership prevents gaps every risk area must have a person responsible for controls and reporting. Regular meetings of the AI governance group can review new AI initiatives, audit usage, and update policies.  

Global Standards and Regulations (2025)  

AI regulations around the world affect global business. This is how:  

  • EU AI Act (in force 2025): The EU’s AI law classifies AI systems by risk level and imposes strict rules on high-risk applications e.g. those used in critical infrastructure, healthcare, finance, hiring, etc. High-risk AI must undergo risk management, data quality checks, testing for bias, detailed documentation and human oversight. Violations can incur huge fines, in the draft, up to €30 million or 6% of global turnover. Importantly, it has extraterritorial scope: any company must comply if it places AI products on the EU market or provides AI services whose outputs are used in the EU. In practice, an Indian AI vendor serving EU customers would need EU-authorized representatives, maintain compliance documentation and CE-mark high-risk systems under the Act. Ignoring this can block access to EU markets, so planning now for these obligations like risk assessments, audits and EU-based reps will save audits later. 
  • U.S. Executive Orders & NIST AI RMF: The U.S. has no single AI law yet, but the federal government has issued various policy guidelines. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has published a voluntary AI Risk Management Framework  that guides organizations in building trustworthy AI by managing risks like bias, explainability, security throughout the lifecycle. Additionally, federal regulators are formulating or issuing AI-specific guidance in areas like consumer protection, labor, or financial disclosures. The upshot: U.S. compliance can be fragmented. Companies working with U.S. government or markets should track NIST guidelines especially if they seek federal contracts and be aware of agency rules. Multinational firms find it hard to juggle different standards, for instance, a healthcare AI in India may need to consider HIPAA (US health data rules), potential EU AI Act conditions, and upcoming Indian laws. Having a dedicated compliance lead or committee to monitor all relevant policies helps manage this smoothly. 
  • OECD AI Principles: These are non-binding but influential. Endorsed by 46 countries (including India), they emphasize human-centric AI, promoting inclusive growth, respecting human rights, ensuring transparency and accountability. While not laws, many national AI strategies are built on these same ideas. In practice, the OECD principles remind organizations to keep AI development balanced; maximize innovation and benefits while minimizing risks.  

Develop Policies and Controls Across the AI Lifecycle 

Translate your vision into concrete rules and processes through: 

  • Data Management: Require that datasets used for AI are high-quality and relevant. Institute processes to check for and remove sensitive attributes or biases from training data. Enforce data privacy and security controls  on all AI-related data, just as you would for any critical data. 
  • Risk & Impact Assessment: Mandate a formal AI risk assessment before any new AI project goes live. Identify ethical risks and legal/regulatory risks. For particularly sensitive or high-impact systems, require a deeper review or prior approval by the governance team.  In effect, this is due diligence on your AI, scouting harms ahead of time and planning mitigations.  
  • Testing and Validation: Establish testing protocols before deployment. Verify that models meet accuracy and fairness criteria on relevant metrics. For critical models, include explainability checks, ensure you can articulate why the AI made a decision. If an AI output cannot be explained or shown to be fair, require a human-in-the-loop to review or veto the decision. Document all test results and quality checks so you have an audit trail of how models were validated. 
  • Human Oversight: Define when and how humans oversee AI decisions. Decide that automated decisions affecting customers always need human sign-off. Assign accountability; each automated process should have a person responsible for monitoring its outcomes. This prevents unchecked automation and aligns with principles of explainable AI. 
  • Approval and Documentation: Create an inventory of all AI systems in use. Require that each new AI system be formally approved through the governance process with risk sign-off and compliance reviews. Record key information: system purpose, training data sources, model versions, known limitations and tests performed. Keep these records up to date.  
  • Vendor and Third-Party AI: If you use external AI services or libraries, extend governance to them. Vet vendors for their ethics and security practices. Update contracts to require compliance with your standards.  Treat AI suppliers like other critical service providers; ensure they are subject to your due diligence and risk controls. Incorporate clauses that explicitly bind vendors to your AI ethics framework. 
  • Anticipate Compliance Obligations: Many upcoming regulations will impose formal duties. India’s government has already reminded companies of due-diligence obligations and content moderation duties.  To prepare, build in these practices now: 
  1. Due Diligence (Bias & Impact Assessments): As noted, evaluate AI systems for potential harm and keep evidence of mitigation steps.  
  1. Documentation & Reporting: Maintain clear records of how AI decisions are made, justifications for those decisions, and the results of testing. Expect that regulators may one day ask for logs, model documentation or compliance reports. 
  1. Deepfake and Misinformation Controls: Implement technical measures like watermarks, digital IDs, detection tools to flag or prevent synthetic content misuse. The Indian government is already urging companies to identify and remove harmful “synthetic media” like deepfakes. 
  1.  Human Oversight Policies: Formalize the policy of human review for sensitive AI outputs. Clear guidelines and training for employees on when to intervene can become a compliance requirement later. 

Continuously Monitor, Audit and Mitigate AI Risks 

  • AI governance is ongoing. Once systems are live, establish monitoring and feedback loops. Track technical metrics such as model accuracy, data drift, error rates as well as business signals flags like customer complaints, unusual outcomes.  
  • Define Key Performance Indicators for governance effectiveness.  
  • Conduct periodic audits.  sample AI decisions to ensure fairness and compliance. Some companies form a quarterly “AI audit committee” to review reports and enforce standards. 
  • Have an AI incident response plan. Define what constitutes an AI failure. Specify who to notify how to investigate, and how to contain the issue. Essentially, treat serious AI problems like cybersecurity breaches  plan ahead for quick containment and recovery. 
  • Finally, encourage a culture of feedback. Make it easy for employees, customers or partners to report suspect AI behavior. Use those reports to refine models and policies. In practice, you might have an online form or hotline for “AI concerns”. The learnings from incidents and user feedback should feed back into model retraining and policy updates  continually tightening the governance loop as your AI evolves. 

Train your team 

While governance frameworks and controls form the backbone, organizations should not overlook the value of internal awareness. Targeted training can help teams beyond just developers such as product managers, marketers, or customer-facing staff understand the company’s AI principles and the real-world consequences of misuse. Hands-on workshops or simulations can reinforce these lessons, while appointing “AI governance champions” within departments ensures a constant link between day-to-day operations and the central governance committee. Periodic transparency updates, even something as simple as reporting model bias rates and improvements, also build accountability and trust internally

ISO/IEC 42001 AI Management Systems Standard 

  • In late 2023 the international community published ISO/IEC 42001 the first global standard for AI governance. This is effectively an AI management system framework. It lays out requirements for how any organization can systematize AI oversight. In ISO/IEC 42001 terms, an AI management system means establishing policies, objectives and processes to ensure AI is used responsibly.  
  • Key points about ISO 42001: it is industry-agnostic and uses the familiar Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. Implementing it means you have documented policies; you execute them in development and deployment, you audit outcomes and measure KPIs, and you make corrections or updates (Act). 
  • Adhering to ISO/IEC 42001 isn’t mandatory, but it offers a benefit; it signals to stakeholders and regulators that you take responsible AI seriously. In technical terms, it provides a certification pathway an external auditor can review your AI management system against the standard. This can make actual regulatory compliance much smoother, since you already have a structured, global best-practice approach in place. In short, ISO 42001 gives you a template to unify all the above steps into one coherent management system. 

Conclusion  

The conversation around AI governance isn’t just happening in boardrooms and policy meetings anymore it’s becoming a defining factor in how businesses will thrive in the years ahead, and smart organizations aren’t waiting for perfect regulatory clarity to act. While regulations will inevitably arrive, companies that embed ethical considerations into every AI decision, establish clear accountability, and maintain ongoing oversight now will find themselves leading rather than scrambling to catch up later. The reality is simple: the organizations that emerge as leaders in the AI economy won’t just be those with the most sophisticated algorithms, but those that people trust to use technology wisely. The future belongs to AI that isn’t just smart it’s trustworthy, and the time to start building that trust through responsible governance is now.
