Microsoft Is Working On Getting Rid Of Passwords For Windows And O359

You Can Choose A Light Theme Or Dark Theme For Your No Password Login Too?

The world has a password problem that is getting worse by the second.  With hordes of apps now requiring you to create a unique account to access them, with a unique password to go with it one of the easiest ways to log in is to jut hit the “Forgot my password” link and reset it each time you log in.  While this often leads to the app telling you you’ve used that password before and need a new one, it is still marginally more secure than writing them down or using the same password for every account.  Password managers are also a decent choice, assuming you don’t lose your master password and the solution you chose has amazing security.

Microsoft will now be setting new XBox, web and mobile accounts to be “passwordless by default”, requiring you to verify once via an email address and then prompting you to use a facial recognition, fingerprint or device specific PIN to authenticate from then on.  This seems to be a revival of their mobile-centric designs of the early 2000’s when they attempted to make their OS look the same on phones, laptops and desktops.  The utter failure of Tiles suggests this is not the best of ideas, but the convenience of dumping passwords may appeal to many users.

You can try it out if you like without setting up a new account, you will be able to change your login settings under your Microsoft account settings.  This new password replacement is being slowly rolled out to all of Microsoft’s users, so you may have to wait a bit to try this out, if that is what you want.  For now this will not apply to work or school accounts, but you can bet they are considering it.
